Construction is
one of the largest industries in many developing countries,
typically in Vietnam. Vietnamese construction industry
contributes around 9% to GDP in the past few years and this
has experienced the robust growth of 25.1% year-on-year [BMI
2008].
In any
construction projects, from small projects to large
construction projects, the stabilization of the foundations
is always the key part. One of the remarkable
characteristics of the foundation structures is that they
are often hidden into the ground after their all
construction processes completed. Therefore, the quality of
the foundation must be not only closely controlled during
the construction phase, but also particularly calculated in
the designing phase. This obviously requires effective
management methods during the foundation construction
process.
Unfortunately,
the management process in foundation construction is not
highly considered in Vietnamese construction industry.
Recently, many construction structures have collapsed in
Vietnam, typically: a residence collapsed in BinhDuong
province which killed five and injured seven people on
19/12/2009 [VnExpress 2009];
a residence collapsed in HamNghi Street on 31/1/2010 in
HoChiMinh city [VnExpress 2010];
the Tranien bridge’s approach road slid down cause the death
of two people in CanTho province on 06/03/2010 [CAND
2010]; CanTho Bridge’s temporary piers collapsed
killing dozens engineers and crews [Vietnamnet
2007]. The main reasons of these mostly stemmed from
foundation problems.
In this
confusing context, it is ESSENTIAL to help the building
organisations which are aware of the latest technical
methods and effective management processes in foundation
construction. The conference that will combine the thoughts
of leading geotechnical engineers and project managers is
very useful and necessary.
As a
consequence, the University of Transport and Communications
in cooperation with DAAD and some other universities
would like to organise an International Conference: “Foundation
Engineering Management – FEM 2010”. This conference will
provide an opportunity for Vietnamese scientists and
constructors in the construction sector in general and in
the geotechnical engineering sector in particularly to learn
experiences from international colleagues and also to
discuss with international experts how to apply those good
lessons effectively to improve the existing situations and
to develop new effective management systems in the future.
On the other hand, international experts can also learn from
the Vietnamese attempts in developing standards for new
foundation technologies.
